Significance
The great chariot festival of Puri, when Lord Jagannath, his brother, and his sister leave the temple and are drawn through the streets so that all may see them — a rare day when the divine comes to the devotee.
The story behind Jagannath Rath Yatra
Once a year the three deities of Puri ride out on towering wooden chariots to their aunt's temple, pulled by thousands of hands. For a festival famed for its inclusiveness, the meaning is plain: on this day the Lord steps out of the sanctum and onto the road, within reach of everyone.
How Jagannath Rath Yatra is observed
- Pulling the three chariots along the Grand Road at Puri.
- The ceremonial sweeping of the chariots (Chhera Pahara).
- Darshan of the deities in the open, away from the temple.
- Community singing and feasting.
