Significance
The great night of Shiva — a night of fasting, stillness, and all-night vigil, kept for inner awakening rather than festivity.
The story behind Maha Shivratri
Many stories gather around this night: the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, and the night Shiva drank the world-poison churned from the ocean to save creation, holding it in his throat. Devotees keep vigil through its four watches, for the night is said to favour those who turn inward.
How Maha Shivratri is observed
- A day-long fast, often without water, broken the next morning.
- Abhishekam of the Shiva Linga through the night with water, milk, honey, and bel leaves.
- Chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya' and the Mahamrityunjaya mantra across the four night-watches.
- Offering bel (bilva) leaves, dhatura, and cool water to Shiva.
