Significance

The birth of Rama, seventh avatar of Vishnu — celebrated at midday, the hour of his appearance, as the close of Chaitra Navratri.

The story behind Ram Navami

In Ayodhya, King Dasharatha longed for an heir; from a sacred fire-offering came a divine payasam for his queens, and in time Rama was born at noon to Kaushalya — the prince whose life would become the Ramayana, the very measure of dharma. His birth is marked at the sun's height.

How Ram Navami is observed

  • Midday prayers and the symbolic cradle-rocking of the infant Rama.
  • Reading and reciting from the Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas.
  • Fasting through the morning, broken after the noon puja.
  • Processions and bhajans, especially at Ayodhya.
