Significance
A Sawan festival honouring the Nagas — the serpent powers of the earth and water — for protection and blessing, at the height of the monsoon when snakes are most about.
The story behind Nag Panchami
Serpents thread through the tradition: Shesha on whom Vishnu reclines, Vasuki around Shiva's neck, the nagas who guard the deep. Nag Panchami sets aside a day to honour rather than fear them — offering milk and prayers so that they, and the household, remain at peace.
How Nag Panchami is observed
- Offering milk, flowers, and turmeric to serpent images or anthills.
- Drawing snake figures at the doorway.
- Fasting and worship for protection from snakebite and for family welfare.
- Refraining from digging the earth or ploughing on the day.
