Significance
A monsoon festival of the Sawan month celebrating the union of Parvati and Shiva — kept especially by women for marital love and wellbeing, amid green fields and swings.
The story behind Hariyali Teej
After lifetimes of devotion and severe penance, Parvati at last won Shiva as her husband; Hariyali Teej marks their reunion in the green (hariyali) of the rains. Women dress in green, hang swings from the trees, and pray for the same steadfast love in their own lives.
How Hariyali Teej is observed
- Fasting by married and unmarried women for a good spouse and married life.
- Swings decorated and hung from trees; folk songs of the season.
- Applying henna and wearing green bangles and clothes.
- Worship of Parvati and Shiva.
