Significance
The appearance day of Hanuman — the vanara devotee of Rama, emblem of strength, courage, and selfless service.
The story behind Hanuman Jayanti
Born to Anjana and blessed by the wind-god Vayu, Hanuman's boundless strength was matched only by his devotion. In the Ramayana he leaps oceans and carries mountains for Rama's sake, asking nothing in return — which is why he is loved as the perfect servant-hero, and why his name steadies the fearful.
How Hanuman Jayanti is observed
- Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, often forty times or more.
- Offering sindoor, a garland, and boondi or laddoo at his temple.
- Fasting and reading the Sundara Kanda of the Ramayana.
- Strength- and service-themed observances at akharas.
