Guru Purnima

Ashadha Purnima · Veda Vyasa, the Guru

Sunday, 18 July 2027
Also known as Vyasa Purnima

Significance

A day of gratitude to the teacher — spiritual and worldly — who carries a seeker from darkness to light. It honours the sage Vyasa, compiler of the Vedas.

The story behind Guru Purnima

Guru is drawn from 'gu' (darkness) and 'ru' (remover). This full moon is kept for the one who removes ignorance, and above all for Vyasa, who arranged the Vedas and composed the Mahabharata. It also opens the four-month Chaturmas, a season of study and restraint.

How Guru Purnima is observed

  • Honouring one's teachers with offerings and gratitude.
  • Reading and reflecting on scripture.
  • Beginning Chaturmas vows of discipline.
  • Puja of Vyasa and the lineage of gurus.
