Significance
The tenth day — victory of good over evil, twice over: Rama's defeat of Ravana, and Durga's of Mahishasura. One of the most auspicious days for any new beginning.
The story behind Dussehra
After nine days of Navratri, the tenth is Vijaya (victory): the day Rama, with Hanuman and the vanara army, slew the ten-headed Ravana and freed Sita; and the day the Goddess completed her conquest. Towering effigies of Ravana are burnt at dusk, evil going up in flame once more.
How Dussehra is observed
- Burning effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna at Ramlila grounds.
- Immersion of Durga idols where Durga Puja is kept.
- Shami-leaf exchange and Astra/Ayudha Puja (worship of tools and vehicles).
- An auspicious day to start learning, ventures, and journeys.
