Significance

The story behind Dhanteras
When the gods and demons churned the ocean, Dhanvantari rose from it bearing the pot of amrita, the nectar of life — the origin of healing. Dhanteras honours him alongside Lakshmi; bringing home something new in metal is held to invite prosperity that lasts.
How Dhanteras is observed
- Buying gold, silver, or new utensils.
- Lighting the first Diwali lamps at the threshold in the evening.
- Worship of Lakshmi, Kubera, and Dhanvantari.
- A lamp for Yama kept through the night for protection.
